Dominick "Nick" Marone (born Payne) is a fictional character on the American CBS soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful. The character was portrayed by Jack Wagner from March 28, 2003 until February 29, 2012, returning for the 35th Anniversary Special Episode on March 24, 2022.

Nick is the son of Massimo Marone and Jackie Payne. He is known for his rivalry with half-brother Ridge Forrester, and his long-lasting romances with and marriages to Brooke Logan, Bridget Forrester, and Dr. Taylor Hayes.

Storylines[]

Arrival in Town and Relationship with Brooke Logan[]

Captain Dominick Payne was in control of a Marone Industries transport ship when a shipwreck occurred, killing the ship's First Mate and several other members of the crew. Nick survived, and landed in hospital, where he was confronted by, and physically fought, a furious Massimo Marone. He was later visited by his mother, Jacqueline Payne, who ran into Massimo upon arrival to the hospital and instantly recognised him. It is also at the hospital where he meets, and becomes intrigued by, Bridget Forrester.

Nick retained his job with Marone Industries, and soon met the beautiful yet scandalous Brooke Logan, which put him at odds with Brooke's ex-husband Ridge Forrester. Their rivalry intensified when it was revealed that Nick is Massimo's son, making the two half-brothers. Brooke ultimately remains committed to Ridge.

Nick attempts to crash Brooke and Ridge's most recent honeymoon in South America, and all three are held captive by natives working for ex-fugitive Sheila Carter, demanding $10,000 worth of Massimo's gold. Whilst tied up against a wall in a cabin, Nick convinces Sheila's accomplice Sugar to release him, before then releasing Brooke and Ridge. They are caught and Brooke is held in a mine cart, moving towards a furnace. Attempting to rescue Brooke, Ridge falls into the furnace, flames burst into the air and Ridge is presumed dead. Nick comforts Brooke during this period and they make love.

Ridge is later revealed to be alive, and shortly thereafter, Brooke falls pregnant and a paternity test reveals Nick as the father. Ridge prepares to raise the child as his own, but a clerical error identifies Ridge as the biological father. Nick races to Brooke's house as she is in labour, and arrives minutes after she gives birth. Nick is offered the baby's umbilical cord to cut, then tells Ridge to do it and informs him that he is the child's father. The child is named R.J. Forrester.

Brooke later splits from Ridge, and further pursues a relationship with Nick. They almost marry, before Brooke returns to Ridge and they renew their wedding vows.

Nick began a relationship with Ridge's half-sister Felicia Forrester, who was soon discovered to have colon cancer. She had medical tests run and was given the all clear. Felicia realized that she and Nick weren't going to work out, and left for Paris in January 2005, returning later that year with a baby son in tow. She believed the baby was Nick's, and hence named him "Dominick". However, it was soon revealed that Dominick was, in fact, the product of a one-night stand with Dante Damiano in Paris, leaving Nick devastated.

Relationship with Bridget[]

After returning from Copenhagen in late 2004, Nick began dating Bridget and they soon became engaged. During their first wedding ceremony, a supposedly dead Taylor suddenly returned alive and interrupted the ceremony. They tried a second ceremony in Las Vegas, but it went awry, and finally a third attempt at the Forrester Mansion, but it was interrupted when Stephanie revealed she had faked a heart attack so Ridge would remarry Taylor and leave Brooke. Believing that fate was warning her, Bridget leaves Nick and he returned to Brooke when her marriage to Ridge was declared invalid.

Bridget discovered she was pregnant with Nick's child, stopping Nick and Brooke's plan of a life together. After many failed attempts in the past, Bridget and Nick finally married in late 2005. When Felicia Forrester returned to town revealing she was dying from colon cancer, she asked Bridget to help raise Dino, and made her his godmother. Bridget promised Felicia to love the child and raise as her own.

Nick and Bridget were devastated when Bridget went into early labor and gave birth to a stillborn daughter, whom they had named Nicole. Realizing she was only with Nick for the sake of Felicia's son as well as her own daughter, Bridget decided to let Nick go, allowing him to return to Brooke.

Bridget then became romantically involved with Dante. Despite her strong feelings for him, Bridget was unable to commit to Dante and they amicably ended their relationship. Bridget then suddenly realized she was pregnant again, but wasn't sure if Dante or Nick was the father (Nick and Bridget had a one-night stand when Nick thought Brooke had chosen to be with Ridge again). However, it turned out that her pregnancy was further along, revealing that Dante was the father.

Nick left Bridget and returned to Brooke, who married him by the Santa Monica Pier.

Intensified Rivalry with Ridge and Stephanie Forrester[]

After Brooke made love to Ridge whilst under the influence of antianxiety medication, Nick accused Ridge of raping her and they engaged in a physical fight. Nick was set to exchange vows with Brooke at a seaside wedding until he saw nude photos of her plastered on billboards; Stephanie, who temporarily wanted Brooke back with Ridge, had used Brooke's discarded promo pictures to discourage Nick. Nick and Brooke's marriage lasted less than a year, before Brooke returned to Ridge, further intensifying Nick and Ridge's rivalry.

Brooke's sister Donna Logan witnessed Stephanie pushing Jackie over a second-story railing at the Forrester mansion, after a fight over Eric Forrester. Nick began on a warpath against the Forresters, and retaliated by holding Stephanie over the same railing and blackmailed her into selling Forrester Creations to him. Nick installed Jackie as president and Donna as lead model, costing him his marriage to Brooke.

After counselling sessions, Nick had a memory of Jackie accepting money for sex; Nick felt disillusioned as Jackie tearfully admitted turning tricks to keep her young son fed. Nick raged when Stephanie made publicly announced that Jackie was a prostitute, and in retaliation, worked to undermine Forrester Originals, the company Brooke, Ridge, and the other Forresters.

Nick sold Forrester Creations back to Eric on the condition that Eric divorce Stephanie.

Framed for Murder of Shane McGrath[]

Nick's niece Phoebe Forrester's ex-boyfriend Shane McGrath blamed Ridge for his break-up, believing that he never supported their relationship. Shane had stalked Phoebe and made several unwanted advances and visits to her, at a time in which she was living with both Nick and her mother Dr. Taylor Hayes. Nick ordered Shane off his property numerous times, to limited avail. Tensions came to a boil when Shane entered Forrester Creations and was noticed by Nick, who threatened to kill Shane and dump his body into the Santa Monica Bay if he ever saw him again. Nick fought with Shane in an elevator and saw him out of the building, but Shane soon regained entry and aggressively confronted Ridge in his office.

Amidst an elevated verbal altercation, Shane pulled out a gun. Becoming increasingly insane, Shane felt alone and fell into depression and believed that if he was dead, no one would even know if he was gone. Ridge attempted to reason with Shane and claimed he would assist to get Shane mental health treatment, but Shane continued to rant and turned the gun on himself, threatening suicide. Ridge struggled to turn the gun away and it went off. Shane smugly grinned at Ridge, before collapsing, dead. It became apparent that Shane intentionally turned the gun on himself during the struggle, to imply that Ridge shot him.

Initially deliberating calling authorities, Ridge suddenly remembered from 10 years prior that he took the blame for the shooting of Brooke's ex-husband Grant Chambers, and was told in a court of law that he would serve jail-time if he committed another gun-related crime. The actual shooter was Brooke and Eric's son, Rick Forrester, for whom both Ridge and Grant wanted to protect. To cover up his involvement, and in a state of panic and desperation, Ridge took Shane's body and dumped in the Santa Monica Bay using Nick's new boat, The Shady Marlin II. The following day, Nick was confused to see his boat in an altered condition to when he last left it, and both Ridge and Stephanie were concerned to see bloodstains on the carpet where Shane had died.

After a police investigation, Nick is charged with Shane's murder and is imprisoned. His lawyer, Brooke's brother Storm Logan, supported Nick as he suspected Stephanie had framed him. As Nick attended court to receive his conviction for killing Shane, Ridge stepped forward and admitted that Shane had committed suicide in front of him, with intent to frame Ridge for his own murder, and that he used Nick's boat to offload Shane's body in an act of desperation. This was further supported by Rick, who, after counselling, convinced the judge that he recalled shooting Grant Chambers, releasing Ridge of the initial gun-related crime.

The charges were dropped and Nick was freed.

Relationship with Dr. Taylor Hayes and Conception of Jack Marone[]

Dr. Taylor Hayes, Nick's psychiatrist, grew close to him after her marriage to Ridge Forrester ended. Taylor and Nick began a relationship. Taylor and Nick quickly fell in love and got married. Even though Massimo Marone and Eric Forrester (Taylor's father-in-law because of her marriage to Ridge which Brooke broke up and Thorne) had a rivalry, they still stayed together. Taylor became pregnant with Nick's child and needed an egg donation and Bridget, a doctor, accidently used her mother Brooke's egg. Taylor found out and was devastated. The baby was named Jack Marone.

Taylor and Jack could never bond the way a mother and child should, and after Taylor begins heavily drinking, the two split up and Brooke was given custody of Jack. With Jack being Brooke's biological child, Nick confessed to Taylor that he was still in love with Brooke, triggering a nasty court fight that ended with Nick obtaining sole custody of the boy. Nick and Brooke were on the verge of reuniting until she decided to stay with Ridge; soon Nick found his way back to Bridget.

Relationship with Katie Logan[]

Katie's brother, Storm Logan, shot Stephanie and framed his father Stephen Logan for the crime. When it was discovered that Storm pulled the trigger, Katie convinced Stephanie not to press charges. But Storm was on a downward spiral, and took a gun to the home of Ashley Abbott, who had recently broken up with him. Katie followed him there, attempted to pull the gun away from him, and Storm's gun went off in the struggle. Katie was critically wounded and not expected to live. A remorseful Storm, who knew Katie needed a heart transplant, took his own life in order to donate his heart to her.

Katie's body initially rejected Storm's heart, and despite taking several anti-rejection medications and therapy techniques, the prognosis was grim, so Bridget convinced Nick and her family to make Katie's last days special. This included giving Katie the high school prom she never had (with Nick as her date), and sending her to Catalina Island, where Nick and Katie developed feelings for one another and made love. Katie was expected to die during her time on Catalina Island, but after further therapy, Katie made a full recovery.

Katie was stunned when she found out she was pregnant with Nick's child. She and Nick eventually told Bridget about their infidelity, enraging Bridget. She divorced Nick in 2008 and told them to be together for the sake of their child. Katie and Nick become engaged. However, their child resulted in a miscarriage, and shortly after they broke off their engagement.

Nick attempted to reconcile with Katie during 2011, allowing her to stay on the Marlin after she a fight with her new husband, Bill Spencer Jr. He then asked Katie to leave Bill for him. Bill got wind of this, went to the Marlin and punched Nick in the face.

Ownership of Spectra Fashions, Rebranded as Jackie M. Designs[]

Nick bought Forrester Creations' competitor Spectra Fashions for Jackie, renaming it Jackie M. Designs (later simply M. Designs). Amid some financial troubles, Rick offered Nick stolen Forrester designs in exchange for presidency at Jackie M. Ultimately, the deal fell through. Nick was intrigued and amused when "Madame X," the new designer Jackie hired, turned out to be Bridget, wanting a change in career path.

Much to Nick's surprise, Stephanie offered to invest money in Jackie M. This was accepted and Stephanie was hired. Ultimately, she left the organisation and returned to Forrester Creations after reconciling with Eric.

After firing Bridget from Jackie M., Nick hired former Forrester designer Amber Moore. As a manipulative gold-digger, Amber aimed to impress Nick in any means possible, going so far as to kissing and massaging him. Nick ultimately was not impressed with the quality of Amber's work, and Amber was later found to be stealing Forrester designs. She was swiftly fired.

Financial troubles re-arose at Jackie M. in 2011, which transferred into personal matters and forced Nick to live with Jackie and Owen. Bill, wanting to crush Forrester Creations, offered to buy Jackie M. and release the financial troubles; an initially obliging Nick changed his mind when Jackie convinced him that she'd rather fail on her own than sell to a conglomerate.

Pamela Douglas, Stephanie's sister and Jackie M. employee, was encouraged to steal Forrester designs. Nick balked at first, but ultimately allowed it after finding Pam interesting and kissing her. During a fashion show, Bridget recognized Eric's designs on Jackie M's runway and informed her father. Nick initially denied stealing the sketches, but Donna worked it out after seeing Nick and Pam dressed up as sea creatures on an episode of Let's Make A Deal. Pam was ousted from Jackie M. and was offered a job at Forrester Creations, working alongside and building a friendship with her once-enemy, Donna.

Jackie M. remained open for several years, but later closed and was sold back to Sally Spectra's son C.J. Garrison. The building came under ownership of Bill Spencer to knock down and create a new Spencer Publications building on, despite revitalisation attempts under the Spectra brand from Sally Spectra II, her sister Coco Spectra, their grandmother Shirley Spectra, employees Saul Feinberg II and Darlita, and Bill's own son Liam Spencer.

Reunion with Bridget and Surrogacy with Agnes Jones[]

Nick was jealous when Bridget began dating model and former Private Investigator Owen Knight, but Nick and Bridget found their way back to each other and married once again. Jackie ironically married Owen herself in Hawaii, where Bridget and Nick were honeymooning.

After discussion surrounding having a child once again, Nick suggested they use a surrogate. Nick and Bridget hired Sandy Sommers, whom Nick soon found out was really Agnes Jones, a rape victim hiding under an assumed name, and the cousin of Jackie M. employee Whip Jones. Nick promised to keep Agnes' secret from Bridget, and tracked down Graham Darros, Agnes' rapist. Nick tricked Graham into chewing a piece of gum to get a DNA sample from him, allowing a police report. Nick later stopped Graham from raping Hope Logan, and after this was revealed, Bridget became furious that Nick had kept the truth about Agnes from her.

Bridget and Agnes frequently feuded over each other's honesty and the safety of the child. During a physical altercation on a staircase, Agnes fell and suffered a miscarriage. Nick and Bridget made up with each other, and celebrated when Bridget surprisingly fell pregnant and Nick presumed himself as the father.

It was later revealed by Agnes that Bridget visited Owen on the night of Agnes' miscarriage, resulting in sex, making Owen the father of the child. A furious Nick punched Owen and divorced Bridget, then humiliated her in front of the Jackie M. staff. Nick then began a relationship with Agnes.

Smoking, Lung Cancer and Related Advocacy[]

Nick was a heavy, long-time cigar smoker. In 2006, Nick left his lighter at Brooke's house while visiting Hope and R.J.; while he was absent, the kids found the lighter and accidentally set fire to the living room - this prompted Child Protective Services to remove them.

Both Nick and Stephanie had spots identified on their lungs as a result of long-time smoking - Nick's spot was non-cancerous, though Stephanie's was. Jackie, Agnes, and Owen created an intervention for them, which included discussions with cancer survivors. Nick and Stephanie both agreed to give up smoking.

Stephanie's cancer remained in remission for the next 18 months, but resurfaced in late 2012. Stephanie declined chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and passed away in November 2012.

Later Ventures and Departure[]

Nick aided in rescue efforts and deploying supplies when Brooke and Thomas Forrester went missing on an island after a plane crash, working closely with Bill in doing so.

During his relationship with Pam, Nick became attracted to Donna, kissed her, and gave her a place to stay on the Marlin. An increasingly jealous Pam retaliated by throwing a pie in Donna's face during Christmas in 2011, whilst dressed as an elf.

After Jackie, Owen, Bridget and Logan moved to New York, it was later mentioned that Nick had sailed off on the Marlin. Nick has reportedly since appeared in news articles, referencing to his undefined work.

Return in Brooke's Dream[]

Nick appeared in Brooke's dream during the 35th Anniversary Special Episode. He came dressed in the same naval suit he wore during their wedding in 2006, and shared many memories of their relationship, to the tune of Going Back Again (performed by Jack Wagner himself). Off-screen, Nick kissed Brooke, as shown in a photo taken from a deleted scene.

He later stood alongside Brooke's other most notable loves and ex-husbands, Eric, Thorne Forrester, and Bill, in Brooke's support.
