Katherine Chancellor Murphy (née Shepherd; previously Reynolds, Thurston and Sterling) was a fictional character on The Young and the Restless, portrayed by Jeanne Cooper. Katherine was considered to be the heart and soul of The Young and the Restless by many, and fans worldwide were devastated by Jeanne Cooper's death in 2013. Her feud with Jill Abbott was some of the core stories trough the years.

In 2005, Cooper's character crosses over to B&B. Katherine Chancellor, who was a longtime business associate of Stephanie Douglas' father, revealed that John Douglas didn't trust Eric Forrester and had created a trust at the inception of Forrester Creations making Stephanie the sole owner of the company. Stephanie fired several employees, including Brooke Logan and Eric and made her younger son Thorne Forrester President. Stephanie would later dissolve her trust and split the shares between all of her children, Eric Forrester, Taylor Hamilton and Brooke Logan.

"Mrs C." aka Katherine Chancellor was last mentioned on B&B in 2023, when Lauren Fenmore and Esther Valentine came to Los Angeles for the fashion showdown between Eric Forrester and Ridge Forrester. Eric mentions again that he knew what a remarkable woman Katherine was.

Biography[]

Katherine Shepherd went to high school with John Abbott, Neil Fenmore, Joanna Manning etc. Most of these early friendships lasted through the years. Katherine was a wealthy pillar of the Genoa City community. She was the sole owner of Chancellor Industries when she died. Katherine's net worth was over 15 billion dollars at the time of her death. Katherine was also credited as a billionaire. She was widely considered the grande dame and matriarch of Genoa City. Katherine's rivalry with Jill Abbott has been a key plot element since the 1970s, when Jill had an affair with Katherine's husband Phillip resulting in Jill becoming pregnant with his son. Phillip subsequently died from injuries related to a car crash caused by a drunken Katherine; however, he married Jill on his deathbed. After Phillip's death, Katherine moved to have Phillip's marriage to Jill declared invalid. (Katherine had been drunk when she signed divorce papers.) This put Jill and Katherine at odds from that moment on. After years of torment from Katherine, Jill turned the tables on her in July 1998 when she discovered a letter penned by the now-deceased Phillip, naming Jill as the sole owner of the Chancellor Estate. Jill evicted Katherine, who then found a loophole which resulted in Katherine and Jill being forced to live at the Estate together.
